I am more then a little ashamed over the fact that I haven´t payed much attention to this band untill now. Because to make a possibly long description short, this EP fucking rips. Five tracks are provided that all dwell somewere in the same hunting grounds as 7 Seconds. Fast and aggressive but with a clear sense of melody, thease songs are made for sing alongs and cirkel pits. "From the bottom of my heart, I love this life" sums up the possitive aggressive message and the celebration of hardcore that Energy is all about. We´re also provided a cover of "Media blitz" by The Germs, which is okey but not nearly as fantastic as Brutal Truth´s version. Damage´s own songs are a lot more intressting, really.
After Initially being released by the band themselves through the Eldsjäl initiative, a re-press has been done by No Front Teeth Records. No excuse then to act as foolish as me.

Boy, oh boy, am I the wrong person to judge this record. I’ve never been in touch with the old hardcore scene, I’ve never been a true fan of the bands that originally made up the sound and scene. To me, Damage feels like a band recapturing that very same spirit; stripped down, back to the basics hardcore. I’m in for a hard time…
The rumbling guitar sound crunches forth simple, yet highly effective, riffs and melodies, backed up by a harsh voice and fairly fast-forward drumming. The description could fit many acts, and I can’t help but to think of Minor Threat, but with a slightly more modern touch á la Amdi Petersens Armé as well as what Epileptic Terror Attack turned out to sound like after their original EP. It’s not overly thrashy, but I suppose it does have its flirtations with the style, which is fairly common when it comes to this type of old school hardcore. It reeks of the early American scene, but there’s also something that feels typically Scandinavian about it, albeit I can’t really put my finger on it. As it’s mostly relatively fast-paced the tunes are filled with energy, and when they slow things down with a track like Media blitz the early, and raw-as-hell, punk rock influences shines through much more brightly. The ultra-melodic back-up choirs of Set us free, on the other hand, sounds very similar to American skatepunk.
So, this is not my thing, as stated earlier. But I can still admire their ability to push energy-ridden music with such a conviction, and fans of the early hardcore sound will most likely go ape-shit over Damage. And if you’re not entirely convinced you want to spend your hard earned money on their records they also offer them for free download, coinciding perfectly with their DIY spirit. Short, spastic, crude and effective hardcore.

En skiva ramlade in för recension med ett Linköpingsband vid namn Damage, som jag tidigare bara sprungit på via myspace. Det är en av baksidorna med myspace det där, hehe. Man hinner inte ta sig tid att lyssna på allt. Men nu är det ändring på det i alla fall vad det gäller Damage. En 7'' med 6 låtar på som jag tror är egenutgiven, men jag kan ha fel där. USA influerad hardcore a'la tidigt 80-tal med "positive youth" anda. En hel del in-it-for-life, kamratskap och diy i texterna som kan vara rätt befriande ibland. Kul med band där allt inte är totalt nattsvart emellanåt. Som brukligt är inom denna musiken så är det rätt energiskt, snabbt, och en del stop & go partier. Är hardcore din melodi så tycker jag absolut att ni ska kolla upp Damage. Dom har även släppt en 12'' som finns att ladda ner här. Testa den först om ni inte törs köpa 7'' direkt.

Old school USHC i stil med T.S.O.L., BLACK FLAG med Henry Rollins mfl. Både rått och snotty på ett sätt som bara sådan här musik kan låta. Tyvärr har det har gått en sådan inflation av band som låter såhär i Sverige de senaste åren att jag instinktivt tänker: neeeej, inte ett till! För helvete, nog måste det väl finnas fler band att hämta influenser från? DAMAGE hymlar minsann inte heller utan plockar helt fräckt bandnamnet från titeln av BLACK FLAGs debutalbum. De önskar säkert att året var 1981 och att de kunde besöka skateparker i Kalifornien men istället är detta ett retroprojekt utan förankring i nutiden, ett otroligt fantasilöst sådant skall tilläggas. Finns det en bruksanvisning därute hur man ska göra sådant här så har man följt den slaviskt. Plattan heter Energy och visst finns här energi alltid! Drivet är oklanderligt, ljudet är rått på rätt sätt utan att bli noisigt i onödan och sången är precis som man vill att den ska låta. Kan tänka mig att det kan bli ett jäkla hallå live.
Hade betyget satts efter hur innovativa de är hade det blivit en överkryssad Critical Mass-skalle. Hade plattan kommigt under första hälften av 80-talet hade den varit en milstolpe. En lika bra platta som onödig. Fungerar endast som ren utfyllnad i en större skivsamling.
Cow Magazine (http://cowmagazine.wordpress.com)"Det känns härligt att äntligen få höra mer från Damage, som gav ut en suverän LP proppad med enklaste men finaste hardcore förra året och nu följer upp med en sexlåtars EP.
Sist det begav sig var majoriteten av låtarna på engelska med några få svenska texter instuckna och det är lite synd att det inte är någon svensk låt alls denna gång.
Ändå så är det samma grymma energi nu som då och jag gillar att både texter, musik och det faktum att skivan är på vinyl ger en väldigt ”analog” känsla. Jag sitter gärna med textpapperet i handen och läser, pillar på omslaget och kollar om det finns någon hemlig etsning på vinylen. Jag vet inte vad det är, men för första gången på länge känns det riktigt kul att snurra vinyl!
”Set us free” och ”Time flies” är mina favvolåtar och jag hoppas få se dem liras på en scen någon gång, Damage är fan grymma!"

"First thought that came into my peanut sized brain was that this sounds like a Mystic Records type of band. Straight ahead, 80’s punk rock sound with basic 4/4 drumming. Guitar lacks distortion and goes for more of a clean sound. It gives it more of a retro sound or recorded live in a garage feel. Thinking that this was from the states, I was wrong. These gents hail from Sweden. Makes more sense now. I’m guessing bands like Amdi Petersens Arme or the Regulations, with their stripped down sound, is what they are going for. Man, these guys are so punk, it’s like they bootlegged themselves. In lieu of a label or any contact information whatsoever, the LP jacket just says, “No label. Do It Yourself.” However, a bit of internet snooping reveals that these dudes are Swedish and, upon repeated listens, shows that Our World is an LP of mostly mid-tempo, no-frills punk with more than a passing nod to their fellow countrymen, The Regulations, in sound if not necessarily aesthetic. Snotty and acerbic songs about hope, partying, hardcore, eschewing society’s standards, etc. Not the most cerebral lyrics, but that’s never really been the focal point of bands like this. The emphasis is on the attitude, that sneering punk swagger and ability to reconnect with a sound from yesteryear without ever flat-out aping it. It’s something so many European bands seem to excel at, this nod to the sonic venom of twenty or thirty years past while also updated and modifying it, keeping it fresh, and you can add Damage to that list. DAMAGE - Our World (Self-released, 12")
There have been any number of bands called Damage over the years. These four lads are Swedish and have a decidedly old-school hardcore sound. Or, rather, taking those influences and playing them with the non-distorted guitar attack utilized by the likes of Smart Cops, Amdi Petersens Arme, et al. The drumming is a little bit one-dimensional but, otherwise, I have few complaints about their no-bullshit style. I got a nice note with the record talking about how it was co-released with a "DIY human resource bank called Eldsjal" (hope I spelled it correctly) that provides info on releasing records and printed matter, booking shows, etc. Anyway, this band has a winning scrappiness.

Man får en ”vänförfrågan”, kollar om det är något band som lirar punk eller spam från nån jeppe som bara vill ha många vänner och godkänner sedan. Ibland lyssnar jag på nån låt och kanske tycker att det är ok, men det blir oftast inte mer än så. Visst finns det undantag men de är få.
Jag gillar inte att hitta nya band genom att strömma musik på nätet, jag vill ha en skiva att sätta in i spelaren eller snurra igång en vinylskiva. Att bläddra igenom en booklet eller dra ut en insert och kolla på bilder och läsa med i texterna ger ett helhetsintryck på ett sätt som aldrig går att återskapa med en sida på nätet.
För ett tag sen blev jag vän med Damage från Linköping och det var samma sak med dem, jag lyssnade lite och godkände dem som vänner. Därför sitter jag nu skamsen i min kammare och kan bara konstatera att deras LP ”Our world” som damp ner i brevlådan härom veckan är grymt bra. All heder till grabbarna i bandet som skickade skivan till mig!
Damage lirar en enkel och stiliserad variant av hardcore som närmast kan beskrivas som USA-influerat rent musikaliskt och produktionen är så avskalad den kan bli. Relativt torra trummor, en gitarr till vänster och bas till höger. En snubbe som skriksjunger korta texter på ett hafsigt och sen inget mer. Korta energiska låtar med fina riff. Skitbra.
Texter om organdonation, droger, zombies, jobbet och annat skoj. De flesta är på engelska men min favoritlåt är nog ”Så trött” som har en sjukt bra refräng som jag gärna skrålar med i. Jag gillar verkligen när sången följer ackorden exakt som den gör här, förutsatt att det blir en schysst melodi och det har de ju lyckats med även i andra låtar.
Det finns en miljard band där ute som jag aldrig kommer lyssna på eller ens bry mig om, men jag vill verkligen rekommendera Damage till alla som gillar rak, snabb och enkel punk. Gör något som jag nästan aldrig gör, gå in på myspace och lyssna. Om ni gillar det, köp skivan!"

"Our World" is the debut album from Swedish band Linköping, which has embraced proven punk name. Musically you can expect garážovej hardcore punk, and the word "garážovej" I would underline in particular. This is not nearly as dark, theatrical mood, how would the Swedish hc punk band might expect, this is its atmosphere approaching more některejm K-Town bands. The entire recording is - say - somewhat untraditional nazvučená. The first thing that interested me was an unusual guitar sound that sounds as if played on the clean sound, with no effect. From the beginning of my album came Damage such a little weak, but it was more that I'm under the impression expectations švédskýho hc punk represented something hrubějšího grains. But over time I tune them podrejvavý overwhelmed and turned on his side.
